Hummingbirds - Photos - Description

Hummingbirds are small in size. The biggest of the species is the Giant hummingbird (up to 8 inches long). The smallest one is the Bee Hummingbird (2 inches long). The plumage of the hummingbird contains tiny faceted granules. Sunlight is refracted in them and eventually gives hummingbirds' plumage a distinctive iridescent shine, which is best seen when the sun is behind the observer. Most of the hummers have greenish feathers.

Hummingbirds have a wonderful ability to fly in all possible directions and positions. They are barely capable of walking and, therefore, move exclusively by aid of the wings. The structure of their wings is way different from that of other birds. A hummingbird's wing has a long bone. There is a joint near the extremity of the bone, but it is not moveable. For that reason hummingbirds move their wings not in the up-and-down manner, but in a figure-eight fashion.

Thanks to this anatomy hummers can brag and boast to their feathered comrades about their flying capacity. They can perform wonderful aerobatics in the air like hovering, suddenly flitting and dashing in and out of shrubs and trees, and even somersaulting. Due to all that they are more often than not compared to helicopters.

Hummers have long and slim bills. That is determined by the natural need to penetrate deep into a flower to reach nectar. The upper part of the bill is bigger than the lower part; therefore the latter is concealed under the upper bill. The tongue is a pair of tubular lengths of flesh with fringed tips. Flower nectar is collected on the tongue tip. Then a bird simply draws in the tongue, thus lapping nectar from the flower.

Hummingbirds are very aggressive. They occupy convenient positions on tree branches and scan the territory for potential enemies. On spotting one, a hummer descends upon the intruder in a wild jet fighting dash, using its needle sharp bill. Female hummingbirds are extremely wary in defending their hatchlings.
